Dog Care Tips: Why Exercise?

Bull Terriers are so muscular and accordingly, they need lots of exercise to stay fit. They love nothing more than playing catch or fetch. Bull Terriers love going for long walks and running. They love playing off the leash, but be careful here because other people tend to not take too kindly to dogs off leash, you don't want to get fined in case there is a leash-law, and you always have to watch out for other animals and humans with their cars.

Exercising your dog is not just good for them, but also for you. Ensure that your bull terrier gets plenty of exercise. Dogs need physical activity and play time; it's good for their physical and mental health. There are plenty of workouts for dogs and it's simple. You don't need dog gym equipment or complicated techniques for exercising your dog. Playing fetch or going for a nice walk will be good for both you and your bully. We like to call our walks "patrolling"! :) Seriously, our bullies don't just go for walks, they patrol for lizards, other little creatures, and are constantly checking our six...it's crazy how watchful and aware they are. Exercising with your bull terrier will help you establish a bond with him or her. Just like humans, dogs need to get a good amount of exercise each and every day. If your dog does not get the exercise it needs, it's health will decline, and so will his/her attitude towards life.

My Dogs Let Me Know

I work from home and my bull terriers definitely let me know when it's time for their walk. If I'm not feeling up to it, or work has just gotten the best of me, Homer and Hera will, pardon my slang, bug the crap out of me until I take them out on a patrol. Homer has this "merrrrr" whine that he does when he wants something and he's relentless! He'll be "all up in your business" until you give in. But once we are mere minutes into the walk, it's "the best day ever!".

It's Walk-ee Time! Homer Says "It's Walk-ee Time!"

How Much Exercise for Dogs? It Doesn't Have to Be Hours A Day

You don't have to take your bull terrier on patrols for hours a day. Take the time to exercise your bully for at least a half hour each day for the best results. Determine your bully's specific exercise regimen. Dogs have different fitness needs based on their sex, overall health, age, breed mix, or breed. Where Homer needs at least a 30 minute walk, run, or frisbee session and could even go on for hours... Hera is done after 30 minutes. Every dog is different, you just have to gauge what is best for your little one.

Core Strengthening Exercises for Dogs

If you want to get a little more into it, you can do some core strengthening exercises with your bull terrier. Core work is fairly new to the canine fitness world and there are lots of benefits such as:

  • Improved strength
  • Improved muscle tone
  • Improved balance
  • Reduced injury risk
  • Improved support of vital organs

Start out by having your bully stand with their back feet behind a solid object. Use a treat to have them stretch forward as far as possible without moving their back feet in front of the object. Help them hold this position for 10-15 seconds and then release. Perform this exercise a few times through.

Most dogs should have a couple 10-minute walks a day around the block. Bull terriers are very active and will most likely require more fitness than others types of dogs, but make it fun and make it for your time for you and your bully! :) Check out my previous blog about other ways to enrich your bull terrier's life!
